Cocobolo B&S, Contreras style V1  DOUBLE TOP, Cedar Top, Cutaway. Cocobolo & Snakewood bindings, 16" radiused Ebony fingerboard & bridge, Cocobolo violin tie & Armrest. Embossed leather case included. AMAZING ! Cocobolo is one of South America's most striking tonewood species. It is found as North as Panama but it also abounds in the Amazon. This striking set emanates a special light that seems to come out of the grain and the intricate figure gains in contrast and beauty against the sunset colors typical of Cocobolo.. I mounted a Cedar Top and melted it into the Cocobolo back and sides using Cocobolo and African Bubinga marquetry. I decided to make her a Double top Variation 1 (a second top is suspended halfway between the main top and the back). The sustain and phrasing that this type of construction  allows is simply Amazing. The second top starts vibrating a fraction of a second after the main top has been excited and the resulting double vibration creates the illusion of a reverb since the air inside the sounbox is pushed several times against the interior walls of the back and sides . I indulged in using Snakewood marquetry and proceeded to mount a 4-band EQ- digital Tuner and position markers to make her as versatile as possible. On request, I will mount strap buttons at no extra cost. The playability is superb and she will make her lucky owner tremendously happy... The double top VARIATION 1, was developed and introduced by  Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the II at the end of the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s. In this Variation of the Double top, a second top is located halfway between the main top and the back. It is held in place by means of little Mahogany bridges. This top vibrates a fraction of a second after the first one creating an immense sustain and punch. Radiused or flat fingerboard? The radiused fingerboard has been around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas, violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to play a  flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard.  The standard fingerboard is flat. 640mm or 650 mm?
