Lapacho
B&S Western Redcedar Hauser braced top Cutaway Masterpiece shipped
to Bali.
Gorgeous trebles, deep guttural basses and a fantastic separation of voices are the quality signature of this amazing combination of North and South American wood species. I was stunned at the clarity of sound and projection of sound that was made of the most rich harmonics and overtones. I played through several pieces of my repertoire and I could literally feel the sound breaking in with every passing piece... quite an amazing instrument. She was custom built for Mike, a great friend and guitar player. In the picture he is holding his Bellucci Cocobolo Cutaway and is in the company of his master teacher Hal Kinnaman (Picture taken in in Kinnaman's studio). Mike has been trained to teach Hawaiian slack key and to play in public with a world class play list. He trained in classical, Bossa Nova, French songs, Italian, Japanese, Philippine and American songs. He studied with Hal for five years. It would take a whole page to list all this master teacher and player awards. Mike also runs a ukulele factory in Bali and works with a master luthier from California. His choice for a Lapacho Cutaway to complement his Bellucci Cocobolo was, in my opinion, one of the wisest any guitar player can make. Lapacho is Paraguay's top wood and one of South America's most sought after species. With a density equal to African Blackwood or Ebony, Lapacho can be bought at a fraction of the price. It has a dense greenish coloration and can often present some fabulous figure. I am the only builder who uses the wood for concert guitars construction and I am sure more and more players will come to appreciate the great qualities of this American wood over time. |
