This guitar sent huge waves of admiration throughout the workshop. As I was warming up to make the video, I could see the luthier's face winking at me whilst giving me the thumbs up sign. The sound she puts out is simply UNBELIEVABLE !! Powerful, crisp and amazingly clear ! I used a beautiful 96 years air dried Tiger like set of Brazilian Rosewood from Mato Grosso, Brazil. It is amazingly beautiful and I knew I would make a mythic guitar from it when I tapped toned it a little over 60 days ago. It responded to my knuckles like a bell. Gorgeous ! I matched the back and sides with a main top of Western Redcedar and a second top of Sinker Redwood. The blend creates a sound so deep and beautiful that you will be in heaven from the moment you start playing her. Asturias shines when I play it and the bass line in the Leyenda prelude gains in personality and giving the right touch to each one of the notes is intuitive. As the piece enters the fast arpeggiated mid section, the whole instrument starts vibrating fully and she sends huge vibrations through my body. Marvelous ! I also played a Bach fugue to get the strings to settle and the way she performs in contrapuntal music and Baroque music in general is unbeatable ! The Leopard wood detailings decorate her lines around the Ziricote wood Bindings, they enhance the violin tie, bridge headplate and backstrip. Her beauty and elegance are supreme and you will know that you found a companion for life. |

Double top V1 View of top #2 The double top VARIATION 1, was developed and introduced by Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the II at the end of the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s. In this Variation of the Double top, a second top (Cedar, Image below) is located halfway between the main top and the back. This top vibrates a fraction of a second after the first one creating an immense sustain and punch |
 The radiused fingerboard has been around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas, violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to play a flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard. The standard fingerboard is flat. |
Sinker logs, are pulled from the bottom of lakes and rivers. Sometimes, scuba divers are needed to achieve the extraction. Most of these logs are hundreds of years old (In one of the pictures above, you can see that the tree was cut with an hatchet). Due to a series of factors (The logs were too big and heavy to be pulled out of the rivers or the logs were caught by currents and were sucked to the bottom) these logs were trapped by the muddy buttons of these water beds and this created like a time capsule where the wood was preserved in fantastic humidity conditions that made the wood season in a slow natural way during many centuries. Some of the logs are selected for musical instruments construction. The sound that these woods produce is unique and the grain has a beautiful coloration that changes according to the type of mud present in the water bed. |
