This
is the third time in all these years and over 1050 instrument built to
date that I come across an amazing set of Brazilian Rosewood. It is stunning
and it shows the shape of a Tarantula in the upper central section of the
back. After receiving a comment by one of her admirers a few minutes ago,
I also see two profiles kissing each other... Therefore, her new name is
"The kiss". Naturally, she will be "The spider" those who like this controversial
animal... for The 2 pieces of the back are so perfectly bookmatched
that it looks as if one half was standing next to a mirror...perfectly
bookmatched! It was shipped from South Western Brazil and the writing
on the box said "Palosanto de Brazil con forma de Tarantula" (Brazilian
Rosewood with the shape of a Tarantula... ). The resulting guitar had to
be perfect ! I made her a double top Contreras style because the second
Brazilian Rosewood top gives an amazing resonance to the guitar. It also
eliminates the need to constantly pamper the guitar which is crack practically
proof (Brazilian Rosewood is one of the most delicate species when it comes
to caring for the instrument. Sudden changes in humidity, cause crack to
appear almost immediately. With the double top Contreras style construction,
this problem disappears completely). I indulged in using the most delicate
marquetry made of African Padauk and decorated the headplate with stripes
of Snakewood. The triple wood reinforced neck with Maple and Rosewood with
the grain perpendicular to the Mahogany neck, creates a sturdiness that
will ensure a perfectly straight neck for centuries. The special cut, which
is the special touch of my #1 master luthier is perfect and looks beautiful
and shows the master luthery that this instrument possesses. Recuerdos
de al Alhambra came spontaneously to me because she's got a pure Spanish
Sound and few pieces represent Iberia better than Recuerdos. The notes
flow easily and she feels amazingly easy to play thanks to the 640mm scale,
slim neck and the 16" radius. This is one of the most amazing instruments
you'll ever see or hear.
