I could
not resist the temptation of building my second ULTRA. My original intention
was to make the Ultra available only through custom orders. I had the perfect
woods for the job and, using the first prototype as a basis, I went ahead
and created this amazing Quadruple top ULTRA. The sum of great construction
ideas add up to the huge sound that this Quadruple top puts out. African
Walnut is tremendously dense and beautiful. You move the guitar slightly
with respect to the striking light and an amazing visual effect is displayed
on the grain. It is really unbelievable. I proceeded to make her a double
top by using Figured Coyote for the second top (and sides). The contrast
between the dark sounding Walnut and the bright Coyote brings out the best
sound a player can dream of. I then placed a third top halfway between
the first top and the double top and this creates an endless sustain that
must be heard to believe... the sound seems to stay up forever... The main
top is also made of Sinker Redwood. This one of the curly species. Redwoods
have an amazing presence of sound and make the guitar much more beautiful
from an aesthetical point of view. It gives the instrument an aged look
which becomes surreal when used in a brand new construction. The ULTRA
elements in the construction are the elevated fingerboard which, in conjunction
with the violin style tie, allows the upper bout to move fully adding approximately
18% more sound and special bracing techniques that make it possible for
the body to move a lot more air which in turn results is a booming sound.
A tremendous PUNCH ! The power of the 6th string on this babe is
probably as powerful as a bass string can get. Unbelievable ! Playability:
PERFECT ! I strive at making my guitars the easiest concert classical guitars
to play. The many years invested in studying and teaching how to play the
classical guitar have given me the insight and clarity of ideas of what
it takes to make a sonorous yet easy to play instrument. My necks are the
slimmest you'll ever find. This, coupled with the 640mm 16" radiused fingerboard,
allows for a natural approach to the left hand technique which in turn
translates in an ALWAYS relaxed and un-stressed left hand. Moving around
the fingerboard while playing Cavatina demonstrated just that. The tricky
barres with hammer ons and pull offs are easy to perform and the hand comes
out of the section in one piece, ready to face the rest of the piece with
strength and energy to spare. Listen carefully to the amazing bass she
puts out and how long lasting the sustain is. The decay of the sound is
barely noticeable and I cannot believe my ears. Beauty wise, I also make
it a main mission when building my guitars that they MUST BE GORGEOUS.
I incorporate every marquetry and luthery detail in the book to bring out
the beauty of woodwork. Luxury handmade trims, rosette and Cocobolo bindings,
Bronze Precision tuners with Rosewood buttons, triple neck reinforcement
truss rod, double headplate, etc., all add up to make her stunning
to look at.

QUADRUPLE TOP CONSTRUCTION
The double top VARIATION 1,
was developed and introduced by Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the
II at the end of the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s. In this Variation
of the Double top, a second top (Cedar, Image below) is located halfway
between the main top and the back. This top vibrates a fraction of a second
after the first one creating an immense sustain and punch.
The double top, was developed
and introduced by Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the II at the end
of the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s. The word "Tapa" in Spanish
translates to top in English but it refers to the back of the instrument.
Therefore, Contreras doble tapa is actually a "Double back".

Radiused or flat fingerboard?
The radiused fingerboard has been
around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is
true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas,
violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand
stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to
play a flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom
guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard. The standard
fingerboard is flat. |
Sinker
logs, are pulled from the bottom of lakes and rivers. Sometimes, scuba
divers are needed to achieve the extraction. Most of these logs are
hundreds of years old (In one of the pictures above, you can see that the
tree was cut with an hatchet). Due to a series of factors (The logs were
too big and heavy to be pulled out of the rivers or the logs were caught
by currents and were sucked to the bottom) these logs were trapped
by the muddy buttons of these water beds and this created like a time capsule
where the wood was preserved in fantastic humidity conditions that made
the wood season in a slow natural way during many centuries. Some of the
logs are selected for musical instruments construction. The sound that
these woods produce is unique and the grain has a beautiful coloration
that changes according to the type of mud present in the water bed. |
