MASTERPIECE !
African
Blackwood is often referred to as "The Holy Grail of Tonewoods". I could
not agree more. It is among the densest woods on the planet and this makes
it a dream to play for the player and yes, a nightmare to work for the
Luthier. The wood is so hard that it literally destroys tools and requires
a lot of knowledge on part of the Luthier. Bending the sides takes 3 times
longer than any other hard wood. Blackwood has been the top choice for
woodwind materials, clarinets, oboes... the reason is that its resonance
is fantastic and it is much easier to work on rotary tools than in the
construction of stringed instruments. It is the one wood that possesses
a sound that puts it apart from all the rest. I often refer to this sound
as a "guttural, almost human like sound, reminiscent of a night owl voice".
I used a beautiful Cedar top and
made her Lattice braced so as to bring out the high registers and compensate
for the dominant bassy presence of sound that Blackwood brings about. The
double top on the other hand, is responsible for the outstanding sustain...
She sings marvelously and responds to my right hand attack instantly pushing
the sound out at an amazing speed. She's BEAUTIFUL and sober and will make
your musicianship shine every time you embrace her.

Radiused or flat fingerboard?
The radiused fingerboard has been
around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is
true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas,
violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand
stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to
play a flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom
guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard. The standard
fingerboard is flat. |
The lattice is a concept
based on the A frame of grand pianos. The back and sides are kept rigid
by means of a sturdy A shaped frame and the top is thinned as much as possible
to allow the top to vibrate generously. Lattice delivers a lot of volume
a tremendous clarity. |
