My passion for the classical guitar started in Italy in 1968. It has taken me to study with Andres Segovia, Narciso Yepes and Abel Carlevaro among other legendary classical guitar players and teachers. Master craft luthiers, low cost of labor and the proximity to the best source of woods at the most competitive prices available, have made it possible for me to come up with great concert class instrument. I build classical guitars from a player's perspective and rescue the best work of every great luthier that has walked this path before me. A custom concert guitar with  these characteristics is sold anywhere between 8,000 to 20,000 US dollars in Europe and the US. Bellucci concert guitars are built using all solid wood exclusively, are 100% hand crafted in Asuncion, Paraguay by the best luthiers in the region and are played in over 83 countries

Whenever I have the privilege to work with Sinker redwood and African Blackwood, i know that the resulting instrument will be an epic one. The deep, guttural sound of African blackwood, combined with the Brazilian rosewood Double top and the Lattice braced Sinker redwood/Cedar top combine in creating a sound so unique as the blend of different tobaccos may be... Cavatina comes natural to play on a guitar so expressive and deep and working around the tricky barres with hammer ons and pull offs is swift and agile on the stylized 640mm radiused actin. The instrument is of amazing beauty and the pictures cannot deliver all her splendor. The owner of this babe will treasure unforgettable moments of music on this amazing masterpiece.

The doble tapa, was developed and introduced by  Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the II at the end of the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s. The word "Tapa" in Spanish translates to top in English but it refers to the back of the instrument. Therefore, Contreras doble tapa is actually a "Double back".

The lattice is a concept based on the A frame of grand pianos. The back and sides are kept rigid by means of a sturdy A shaped frame and the top is thinned as much as possible to allow the top to vibrate generously. Lattice delivers a lot of volume a tremendous clarity.

Barrios' Una Limosna por el amor de Dios is perhaps the best piece to test an instrument on a hugely vast spectrum. As I played the piece I could immediately notice the spectacular 5th string that carries a counterpoint line in the first few measures of the piece; The 6th sends a big punch through the player's body; the third sings wonderfully and this alone sets her apart from many concert classicals. Finally, the melody is clear and sweet and sings majestically.
I achieved this by using one of the oldest sets of Brazilian rosewood I have had the chance to work. It air dried almost 100 years which means that WW1 had not even started when this set begun drying ! This certainly puts the age of this set in perspective. I matched the Brazilian rosewood with a gorgeous set of Cedar and bonded the different parts using all the Bellucci artistic enhancements to make her Royal and a TOTAL eye candy. The action is easy and I can move around the different positions od Una limosna with ease and practically no left hand squeaks. A true JEWEL !

This Wonderful African Blackwood Nomex Double Composite top will simply blow you away ! She is not only sober and elegant to look at but delivers  a sound that is only achievable by the African Blackwood/Spruce combination. The hardest wood on the planet (African Blackwood) is mixed with the highest growing tree ion the planet (Alpine Spruce, -1,800 mts-). The mixture is explosive to say the least. The clarity of cedar is enhanced by the tremendous power of Blackwood and the sustain of the Nomex double top. PERFECT! I made her 660 to satisfy those players with larger hands and/or bodies. Still, you can request to have her changed to 640 or 650mm- allow 1 week). Asturias shines majestically on this babe and I feel as though I am driving a super sports car... The bass line vibrates generously as the mid and high strings shine clearly throughout the work. The sound does not decay as you approach the higher positions...this is part of the Nomex contribution to guitar sound. A JEWEL guitar !!

The Nomex (Composite double top) allows the top to vibrate fully and uniformly achieving a sound that instead of dying immediately, is sustained and then released creating a huge reverb ... on the digital db meter, double tops can push the needle up to 93.3 dbs (as a reference, keep in mind that seasoned Contreras and Ramirez guitars seldom reach 90). One of my Ziricote/Spruce peaked 93.5

When I think of "Spanish Sound", I cannot think of a better instrument to deliver it than this amazing double top. Asturias shines majestically and you feel that the sound capability of this babe is endless. What a presence !! The sound changes immediately to every slight change in the angle of attack of the right hand fingers. The phrasing becomes spontaneous and this is quite a challenge to achieve in a piece like Asturias. Well, not on this babe. Everything is natural when performed on this amazing guitar.
I indulged in every Bellucci guitar construction enhancement to make her BEAUTIFUL to both the ear and the eye. This is one of those amazing guitars you do not want to miss. Amazing !

This spruce top is the type of guitar that makes you go WOW from the very first note I pluck on her. An amazing sound that projects majestically due in part to the double top (made also in Brazilian rose) and to the lattice braced spruce combination that produces some of the finest instruments o the planet. The set of Brazilian rose is originally from Cascavel (Rattle Snake, Brazil) and I made it a double top using another set of Brazilian rose from Minas Gerais. Contreras used to make the double top in cedar, but in my region Brazilian rosewood is quite affordable. therefore, I indulged in using it for the double top (and sides). Everything on this beauty speaks of art and beauty and you can contemplate her for hours at a time. Asturias felt like it was going to explode and the lung on this babe is simply AMAZING. Swift, easy action to render the piece like the best players out there...

This is the oldest set of Brazilian rose I had the chance to work with. It has been air drying since 1909, way before the beginning of WW1. The set is responsible for he mature sound and the powerful and fast response on this amazing babe. As I played Saltarello, I could feel the amazing punch of the D-A-D bass pedal sending amazing vibrations throughout the instrument. The vibrations would pass to my chest and the feeling is amazing. I made her a double top Contreras style, Variation 1. What this means is that a second top, Cedar, is mounted halfway between the main Alpine spruce top and the back. The blend  that Spruce and Cedar bring about is fabulous. You get the clarity of Spruce and the amazing punch of cedar. The sustain is breathtaking. The second top vibrates several seconds after the first top ceased to do so. Playing the instrument is easy due to the low action on the radiused 640mm action. A true masterpiece!

Bellucci guitars tops
These are the main characteristics or Spruce, cedar and redwood: Spruce will give you a  brighter crispier sound with more punch....open, clear tone. Cedar, will be a little warmer. Spruce takes longer to open up.  You can also see it this way: Baroque Classical and Renaissance music will sound better on spruce, Romantic, Spanish and program music will sound better on cedar. These are of course generalizations and what is definitely true is that both Cedar and Spruce make for excellent sound boards. Redwood is very similar to Cedar but with more presence. Italian Spruce is my favorite. Brilliant sound and tight grain. Port Orford cedar has qualities of both Spruce and cedar. Sinker redwood is simply outstanding but rare and expensive. If you have other wood varieties in mind for the top, let me know.

640mm or 650 mm?

Guitar scale lenght

stretch

Regarding 650mm or 640 mm guitar construction, keep the following rule at hand: If the distance between the tip of your thumb and the tip of your little finger is equal or less than 9 in. when fully stretched, use 640 mm (image above). In over 33 years teaching and playing the classical guitar and having worked closely with such great teachers as the Spaniard Jose Tomas and the Uruguayan Abel Carlevaro, it came clear to me that often hard to polish musical passages were not the fault of the player but a fault of the scale used for the fingerboard. Modern guitar construction is no longer dependent on scale length to produce a substantial volume. When we talk about scale length we are talking to the relative distance of the frets from one another... we are talking millimeters or fraction of a millimeter, but it is these fractions that make all the difference between flawless and sloppy technique....let alone the great frustration that derives from never being able to polish a given musical passage.

   Radiused or flat fingerboard?

radiused

The radiused fingerboard has been around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas, violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to play a  flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard.  The standard fingerboard is flat. When you relax the hand, you will notice that the natural shape is with a slight curve on all 5 fingers. Pros playing is about achieving to perform on the guitar  in as much a natural and relaxed manner. Whenever you part from these directives, you are making your path to perfection steeper.
The radius is standards on the acoustic, electric and archtop (jazz) guitar and, if you look closely, you will notice that these players will use lot less energy than classical players and that their fingers are almost always curved.

Lattice VS fan

The lattice is a concept based on the A frame of grand pianos. The back and
sides are kept rigid by means of a sturdy A shaped frame and the top is thinned as much as possible to allow the top to vibrate generously. As you see from the picture above, the thinned area is approximately 1.2 mm thick (VS 2-2.5 in the standard thinning techniques). Lattice delivers a lot of volume (approximately 21 dbs more) and wonderfully clear trebles.
The Doble tapa was introduced by Manuel Contreras II and refers to an additional piece of wood that is covering the inside of the back. "Tapa" in Spanish means back. Therefore, the Contreras Double top is actually a Double back. The other variation to the doble tapa, is a system I first saw and played on a 1986 Ramirez Doble tapa when I lived in Madrid. The system was a Contreras based one nevertheless. It is variation to the doble tapa Contreras.  It is extremely powerful. It consists of a second top (normally cedar) that runs parallel to the first one halfway between the top and the back. It is the system that better seems to show what one would expect a double top to look like. The 2 tops are connected through the sides and the transversal struts and the resulting sound is full and very powerful. This is the most laborious of the 3 doble tops from a construction point of view.

Double top
Double top with Nomex core
Doble tapa, variation 1
Doble tapa Contreras style (variation 1)

The double top with Nomexis basically a sandwich where a thin layer of synthetic fire retarding material (Nomex) is inserted between two super-thin tops. The total thickness of the 3-layered top is equivalent to a normal top. The center layer is practically speaking hollow, therefore it is also called "hollow guitar top". This is more expensive because 2 tops+Nomex and special adhesives have to be used in the construction... Double top makes the sound of the guitar stay up longer before it decays. It brings about balance in the voices and approximately 21 dbs more in overall volume.

The violin type of bridge or archtop guitar style bridge are a great input in guitar construction. A lot of the strain caused to the guitar top by the pull of the strings is taken away prolonging the life of the woods for many decades. The armrest is also genial because it keeps the tendons in the forearm more relaxed and is a source of comfort during performance. The hole in the upper and/or lower bout augments the trebles output and works as a sound monitor for the performer.

  • Adjustable truss rod
The action on Bellucci guitars is set-up for maximum playability. Still, some players like to try different strings and the thickness changes from brand to brand resulting in unwanted buzzes. Acoustic and electric guitar players are especially attached to this gadget. The Truss rod is an excellent remedy which is a lot safer than tinkering with the saddle and nut bones. The action is only moved a few millimeters or fractions of a millimeter by means of a regulator which is placed on the headstock, after the nut. The truss rod is not meant to adjust the height of the strings on the fingerboard but to counter the pull or thickness of the strings especially if you like high tension strings. Still, over 99% of the world classical guitars do not carry a truss rod. I have received the request in the past and I want to offer the option to my customers. One thing is sure, the truss rod will keep your neck straight for several lifetimes.... I built my spruce top with a truss rod and I love the gadget !
