Zebrawood B&S Doubletop
Jerry's Masterpiece !
This amazing Custom Bellucci Zebrawood B&S Doubletop Concert Guitar was built for guitarist Jerry Funchion. It is simply put Breathtaking !
The sheer beauty of the amazingly striped Lattice Braced Zebrawood back and sides, Doubletop, coupled with a stunning set of Cedar for the top (and a Spruce Doubletop) and using the most exquisite marquetry, brings to life what I consider a masterpiece of Epic proportions. Zebrawood generates a marvelous sound with well balanced deep bass and clear trebles. It is a dense wood that generates a unique set of harmonics and overtones comparable to African Walnut and African Blackwood. Add to this that she's Lattice braced and you will understand how she can put out such an amazing sound. I could go on and on trying to convey the amazing sound she's capable to produce. Specialized instrument and woodworking magazine asked me to use the pictures of this amazing guitar to illustrate the possibilities of Zebrawood. A glorious African Wood. Cedar on the other hand possesses the best qualities musicians look for in tonewoods. An amazing separation and punch enriched by the sweetest sound you can dream of. Add to this that the second top is made in Spruce and you will see how this instrument possesses the best of both worlds. The use of the violin tie and the armrest adds to the sustain and clarity because the top is free to vibrate fully because here is no distortion generated by the forearm touching the top and because the strings are anchored in a much sturdier part of the guitar. This feature frees the bridge from the amazing strain that anchoring the strings generates, thus it is fully dedicated to passing the vibrations of the strings to the fan brace. You will spend countless hours admiring the beauty of this masterpiece. There is no an inch on this marvelous instrument that does not speak of love and uncompromised dedication. Matching every part of the construction to achieve a flawless design was a big part of the challenge and I was able to get enough Zebrawood to do the bridge, armrest, violin tie fingerboard and headstock using this stunning species. Jerry wanted her to be a Doubletop and this translates into one of the most amazing guitars sounds we produced to date. Listen how vibrant Asturias sound ! I could feel the body of this amazing doubletop vibrate on my lap generously as I played through the opening Prelude and she would explode in the rasgueado. A true work of art for the ages. S.D.G.
The Double top is an extremely powerful system to augment sustain and eliminate wolf notes. It consists of a second top (normally Cedar, Spruce or Sinker Redwood) that runs parallel to the first one halfway between the top and the back. It is the internal body construction system that better seems to show what one would expect a double top to look like. The 2 tops are connected through the sides and the transversal struts and the resulting sound is full and very powerful.
The indented cutaway is both very beautiful and extremely useful. It requires the highest level of luthery to be made and when it comes to playability, it allows the player to access the F# on fret 14 with amazing ease thus covering the 14 most used frets in the classical guitar.
The BellucciHand tooled Leather Case is the Premium Bellucci Case. The Bellucci hand embossed Genuine Leather case is a work of art on its own right. Built by one of a handful of very talented leather embossers in Latin America. It takes countless hours of patient labor to build and emboss a single leather case. Bellucci guitar cases are built following my specifications for both the interior and exterior in order to fit Bellucci guitars like a glove. The Bellucci Guitar Case will also fit other standard full size concert classical guitar brands. Each Bellucci Hand Embossedcase is a unique work of art hand stitched and built to last forever. It takes over 110 hoursof very skilled and patient labor to build a single Bellucci Hand Embossed Leather Case. Each one is a true masterpiece. S.D.G.
Bellucci guitars are decorated using marvelous wood marquetry to enhance all her lines and put an accent on specific parts of the construction. The marquetry requires anywhere between 35 & 90 hours of highly skilled labor to be inlayed throughout the guitar. It is made entirely by hand using knives that each luthier typically manufactures himself. It takes the guitar to unsuspected levels of beauty. The marquetry also constitutes an often critical point of release of tension which is caused by the constant expanding and contracting of the woods used in guitar construction. These are due to such factors such as humidity and ambience temperature.
The Bellucci Limited Edition logo and label will be assigned to guitars I
build using extremely rare and amazingly figured woods in the
construction for both the back and sides and/or the top. These sets are
selected among hundreds of sets and their price is significantly higher
that the standard figured counterparts. 7 of the world best "wood
hunters" all the way from South East Asia, Oceania, Africa and the
Americas are constantly on the lookout to provide me with some amazing
sets for the Limited Edition series.
The lattice is a concept based on the A frame of grand pianos. The back
and sides are kept rigid by means of a sturdy A shaped frame and the top
is thinned as much as possible to allow the top to vibrate generously.
The thinned area is approximately 1.2 mm thick (Vs. 2-2.5 in the
standard thinning techniques). Lattice delivers a lot of volume and
wonderfully clear trebles.
The armrest prevents the forearm to interfere with the vibration of the top thus adding a few extra decibels to the instrument. Plus it looks great !
The Violin tie type of anchoring allows the top to vibrate generously and it also translates in ease of play for the right hand that finds the string ready under the fingertip at lightning speed.
The Lute type sound hole is not merely an aesthetically element of guitar construction but also closely related with sound production and acoustics in general. The lute type sound hole forces the air inside the guitar to excite the surrounding woods longer than the conventional sound hole, thus generating an overall fuller and more powerful sound.
Some Sets for either the Back and Sides, for the Top or both can be quite stunning and rare when it comes to the figure and grain that they display. It is as if nature, knowing the final destiny of its creature, "prepared" the wood in such a way that its grain, hidden to the human eye and to the world, silently develops a breathtaking beauty that comes to life when the dead tree is sawn. Getting the same identical figure is practically speaking impossible but I strive at getting figured wood that resembles and transmits the same vital impression as the one here depicted
Carbon Fiber is stronger than an equivalent volume of steel. The Carbon fiber truss rod prevents neck twisting and/or bending due to the excessive tension that many modern brands of strings bring about. It adds practically no weight to the construction and will keep your neck straight for ages.
Typically, when I decorate the rosette with Pearl and Abalone, I match the work with touches of both Pearl & Abalone on the Bridge and/or on the accompanying Violin tie.
Adding Pearl and Abalone to the Wood rosette adds a touch of beauty to one of the most spectacular parts of the guitar. The Pearl in the rosette is accompanied by a matching touch of Pearl & Abalone on the bridge
