The Ultra Concept Guitar
AFRICAN WALNUT B&S, Sextuple top (Nomex + Contreras + V1), QUILTED Cedar top.  African Padauk bindings, Exclusive handmade luxury marquetry.  Ebony bridge & violin tie. Walnut Armrest.  16" radiused Ebony fingerboard, Lute type soundport in Upper bout, 640mm fret spacing. Elevated fingerboard (ULTRA construction)  Embossed leather case included.  World first Sextuple guitar. AMAZING!!!
I have never come across a Quilted Cedar top before. It is stunning !! The intricate drawings of nature add beauty that words have difficulty to describe... but all the  amazement in looking at this beauty take the back seat when I start playing her... This is the world first Sextuple top concert guitar... It was only natural that I'd try combining all 3 types of existing double tops in a single instrument. I had tried all the other combinations... I am so happy I did. Pay attention to both the bass and the treble string as I play Romance... Keep in mind that Carlevaro technique does not require the rest stroke, therefore,  the melody is created with a free stroke. The B-A-G melody in Romance shines marvelously while the bass seems to last forever... I feel the immense palette of sound available to my right hand and I can produce the most delicate vibrato with just a slight move of the left hand. This is probably the contribution of the Nomex double top (AKA Hollow top). It takes over 300 hours to build a Sextuple top with these characteristics. Add to the Sextuple top construction the fact that I also added the Ultra construction enhancements like the elevated fingerboard and the minimalistic internal construction to allow the tops to move a 25% more and make her project anywhere between a 20-35% more than a conventional multiple top guitar. She will carry a special commemorative label to indicate that she is a World first.

Sextuple top:
Sectuple top

The double top VARIATION 1, was developed and introduced by  Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the II at the end of the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s. In this Variation of the Double top, a second top (Cedar, Image below) is located halfway between the main top and the back. This top vibrates a fraction of a second after the first one creating an immense sustain and punch.

The double top, was developed and introduced by  Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the II at the end of the 70s. The word "Tapa" in Spanish translates to top in English but it refers to the back of the instrument. Therefore, Contreras doble tapa is actually a "Double back" (and sides). The Doble tapa allows the back and sides to be much more sturdy and reflect sound on the inner  walls of the body with much more intensity and speed. This makes the sound boom majestically.

Sinker logs

Sinker logs, are pulled from the bottom of lakes and rivers. Sometimes, scuba divers are needed to achieve the extraction.  Most of these logs are hundreds of years old (In one of the pictures above, you can see that the tree was cut with an hatchet). Due to a series of factors (The logs were too big and heavy to be pulled out of the rivers or the logs were caught by currents and were sucked to the bottom)  these logs were trapped by the muddy buttons of these water beds and this created like a time capsule where the wood was preserved in fantastic humidity conditions that made the wood season in a slow natural way during many centuries. Some of the logs are selected for musical instruments construction. The sound that these woods produce is unique and the grain has a beautiful coloration that changes according to the type of mud present in the water bed.

Radiused or flat fingerboard?
The radiused fingerboard has been around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas, violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to play a  flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard.  The standard fingerboard is flat.
