Brazilian
Rosewood B&S, Double top
Contreras V1, Alpine Spruce top CUTAWAY. Snakewood bindings. Mother
pearl Rosette and detailings. Double soundport in upper and lower bout.
16"
radiused Ebony fingerboard. The PERFECT CONCERT CUTAWAY! Here
is one spectacular Concert Cutaway. I used a superb perfectly bookmatched
96 years air dried set of Brazilian rosewood from Minas Gerais. This means
that WW1 was about to begin when the wood for this set started drying.
This helps put the age in perspective.
The sound
reflects the maturity of the wood which translates in a deep sounding very
expressive instrument. The bass is round, deep and robust whilst the clarity
of the higher registers is perfect. I topped the Brazilian rosewood with
Alpine Spruce and used Sinker Redwood for the second top which is mounted
halfway between the main top (Alpine Spruce) and the back. I used Sinker
redwood for the second top, placed halfway between top 1 and the Rosewood
back. It adds a unique signature to the sound that no other wood can replicate.
Snakewood and Walnut, to decorate this beauty and define her exquisite
lines. I then proceeded to add Tahitian Mother of pearl to make the rosette
and decorate the violin tie, bridge and headstock.
The sound
is well balanced with first class separation between the different voices
and with each string preserving its unique character. The sustained bass
line creates the perfect background for the epic melody to stand out gloriously.
Playability is natural and the 16" radiused fingerboard along with the
640mm scale and the cut all add up to make the playing experience on this
Queen a wonderful one. She is a true work of art for those players
that prefer a cutaway over a classical shaped concert guitar.

The double top VARIATION 1,
was developed and introduced by Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the
II at the end of the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s. In this Variation
of the Double top, a second top is located halfway between the main top
and the back. It is held in place by means of little Mahogany bridges.
This top vibrates a fraction of a second after the first one creating an
immense sustain and punch.
Italian Alpine Spruce is
the highest growing tree on the planet. It grows at or above 1,800 meters
where the oxygen is rarefied. This makes the grain much tighter resulting
in a strong reverberating tone wood. This is the species Stradivarius used
for his legendary violins.
Radiused
or flat fingerboard? The radiused fingerboard has been
around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is
true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas,
violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand
stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to
play a flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom
guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard. The standard
fingerboard is flat.
Sinker
logs, are pulled from the bottom of lakes and rivers. Sometimes, scuba
divers are needed to achieve the extraction. Most of these logs are
hundreds of years old (In one of the pictures above, you can see that the
tree was cut with an hatchet). Due to a series of factors (The logs were
too big and heavy to be pulled out of the rivers or the logs were caught
by currents and were sucked to the bottom) these logs were trapped
by the muddy buttons of these water beds and this created like a time capsule
where the wood was preserved in fantastic humidity conditions that made
the wood season in a slow natural way during many centuries. Some of the
logs are selected for musical instruments construction. The sound that
these woods produce is unique and the grain has a beautiful coloration
that changes according to the type of mud present in the water bed.
