Every now and then, life throws amazingly beautiful surprises. Such is the case with the sound on this spectacular instrument. I simply cannot believe the power of sound and the amazing third string that she possesses. The third string is always the Achilles' tendon in classical guitars. A series of factors conspire in making it a not particularly bright sounding string. Well, this spell was broken when we built this babe. Her third string is from another Galaxy! I chose to play Barrios' Una Limosna por el amor de Dios because the work has a relentless third string that plays the counterpoint to Barrios' last composition (image below).
The bass is powerful with a mind bobbling presence and the separation of voices as well as the sustain are AMAZING ! I mentioned to my son, that this is the type of guitar that I should keep and not seller sell at an amazingly high price...but no, we will make some fortunate player tremendously happy. I am sure that the aged Brazilian Rosewood and the  lattice braced Alpine top contribute enormously to the sound and, as with every piece of art, it is the sum of countless details that bring about a masterpiece of such proportions.

Friday, April 8, 2011: Today started out just as any other day. Little did I know that quite a few pleasant surprises were awaiting for me at the guitar studio. My son Renato had already begun taking the pictures of our last creation. Had it not been for one particular shot that needed to be lit from a very specific and quite tricky angle, I would have probably not participated in the guitar photo shoot at all.
TJ (my son Renato's nick)  has steadily become a more proficient photographer and I am tremendously proud of both his studio and post production work at the computer where each image must be perfectly selected to deliver the best possible impression of the guitar. This babe will most likely be purchased by a player thousands of miles away... continues in my blog

The lattice is a concept based on the A frame of grand pianos. The back and sides are kept rigid by means of a sturdy A shaped frame and the top is thinned as much as possible to allow the top to vibrate generously. Lattice delivers a lot of volume a tremendous clarity.

Radiused or flat fingerboard?
The radiused fingerboard has been around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas, violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to play a  flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard.  The standard fingerboard is flat.

650 mm or 640 mm?
Keep the following rule at hand: If the distance between the tip of your thumb and the tip of your little finger is equal or less than 9 in. when fully stretched, use 640 mm

Italian Alpine Spruce is the highest growing tree on the planet. It grows at or above 1,800 meters where the oxygen is rarefied. This makes the grain much tighter resulting in a strong reverberating tone wood. This is the species Stradivarius used for his legendary violins.
