I
remember as if it were yesterday, my father arriving at home after work
with a Segovia EMI record in his briefcase. The LP was "Castles of Spain".
(Castillos de España, Image to the left). It was a rendition
of the suite by the great Spanish composer Moreno Torroba. I was 9 years
old. I was learning the piece in Bari, Italy, with my first teacher, Vincenzo
Calsolaro. My teacher told my dad where to get the LP and I would use it
as a reference for many years in order to learn expression, phrasing and
above all sound. To anyone who has ever taken the time to examine Segovia's
sound, it will become evident what an amazing array of voices and what
an expressive phrasing the Spanish Master had. This instrument is inspired
in the Hauser that Segovia played on that LP. I added those features that
I consider essential from a player's perspective: The violin tie and the
armrest that allow the instrument to blossom to its full potential whilst
prolonging the life of the top exponentially.
Playing Elegia (Elegy) from the Castles of Spain suite was inspiring on this elegant lady. The pure Spanish sound is present with the rich harmonic Latin American touches. |
