When
the most amazing beauty is coupled with a Heavenly sound, I am the happiest
human being on Earth. This stunning Purple Heart guitar was able to deliver
both things and. She's sending waves of admiration throughout the local
guitar community staring with my wife and children, the luthiers in my
team and so forth. I was able to get the wood from my good friend Bob and
had been dreaming of the perfect matching of woods and construction techniques
to make her a Sovereign instrument. 222 hours later, I was making the video.
Thumbs up and faces of admiration were looking at me from the tempered
glass dividing the studio from the workshop. The dense purple red color
speaks of passion and love and to play Barrios Mangore "Una Limosna..."
was the only natural choice from my repertoire. The counterpoint is steady
and clear, the trebles carry the melody gloriously throughout while the
bass sends a huge wave of harmonics that fills my studio with the most
beautiful music ever.
I made a recording
for my upcoming CD using this beauty. It's Ennio Morricone's Deborah's
Theme, one of the sweetest pieces EVER written. The Purpleheart cutaway
performed marvelously.
The Alpine
spruce top in the main top is responsible for the clarity and power. The
Second top, halfway between top 1 and the Purple Heart back is made of
Sinker Redwood and delivers a deep, profound sound that only this species
can pull out. This is a cutaway that will make you fall in love again and
again every time you embrace her....

The double top VARIATION 1,
was developed and introduced by Master Luthier Manuel Contreras the
II at the end of the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s. In this Variation
of the Double top, a second top is located halfway between the main top
and the back. It is held in place by means of little Mahogany bridges.
This top vibrates a fraction of a second after the first one creating an
immense sustain and punch.
The Purple Heart is the oldest
award that is still given to members of the U.S. military, for those
who have been wounded or killed while serving. The wood, found mainly
in Central and South America, resembles the color of this epic medal and
is found in different shades of Purple that go from light bluish to almost
faux (image below).
Italian Alpine Spruce is
the highest growing tree on the planet. It grows at or above 1,800 meters
where the oxygen is rarefied. This makes the grain much tighter resulting
in a strong reverberating tone wood. This is the species Stradivarius used
for his legendary violins.
Sinker
logs, are pulled from the bottom of lakes and rivers. Sometimes, scuba
divers are needed to achieve the extraction. Most of these logs are
hundreds of years old (In one of the pictures above, you can see that the
tree was cut with an hatchet). Due to a series of factors (The logs were
too big and heavy to be pulled out of the rivers or the logs were caught
by currents and were sucked to the bottom) these logs were trapped
by the muddy buttons of these water beds and this created like a time capsule
where the wood was preserved in fantastic humidity conditions that made
the wood season in a slow natural way during many centuries. Some of the
logs are selected for musical instruments construction. The sound that
these woods produce is unique and the grain has a beautiful coloration
that changes according to the type of mud present in the water bed.
640mm or 650 mm? Radiused
or flat fingerboard? The radiused fingerboard has been
around the acoustic and the electric guitar since day one. The same is
true for most instruments of the Stringed family of instruments (violas,
violins cellos, bass). Radiusing (image above) makes barre and left hand
stopping A LOT easier. The only drawback is that you will NEVER want to
play a flat fingerboard after that. If you are having your custom
guitar built, I am all pro radiusing the fingerboard. The standard
fingerboard is flat.
