I discovered
this amazingly beautiful and noble tonewood from Southern Australia in
mid 2010. Earlier the same year I had my first encounter with another Tasmanian
species, Tiger Myrtle, and I was blown away. Well, apparently Tasmania
is full of great surprises for me! The looks and sound of this beauty are
immense. As soon as lacquering was finished and the instrument was polished,
a stunning metallic like reflection appeared that makes her simply irresistible.
It is as if the wood captured the surrounding light, amplified it and reflected
it back adding a myriad spectacular reflections. This has only happened
three or four times since I build guitars (I built over 1,000 to date).
In other words, it is not a feature that can be requested on custom order.
Everything looks the same when you look at the wood in its natural state
but something (I presume it is the way the wood fibers are oriented) changes
the overall appearance when the instrument is finished. Coupling every
single wood for the construction was the dream of any luthier. I matched
the deep honey with black figure of the back and sides with a fabulous
Western Redcedar top. I bonded the parts using the finest handmade marquetry
and African Padauk bindings.
The sound in the is phenomenal.
The amazing power of the bass comes out gloriously and so do the crystal
clear notes. She's tremendously expressive and this can be noted in the
fast arpeggio sequence in Asturias where the bass line carries the main
melody with the thumb while the m and i finger carry the counterpoint on
the first and second strings. As I play, I feel the instrument vibrate
fully and the response is fast and powerful. She is a TRUE QUEEN
!!
